(Blog 19) Votes Are In

WEDNESDAY MORNING: Team Dragon and Team Snake were both eager to hear the results of the Homecoming votes tallied from the day before. Lena was the favorite to win, but Sienna had made the race anything but easy. She had led a respectable campaign with the assertiveness and persistence of a strong leader. She also had ample support and her booth looked phenomenal.
Lena and Sienna had formed a frienemy relationship over the years. Sienna was friendly enough when she wanted to be, but (perhaps from more ignorance to snake culture than anything else) Lena was reluctant to trust her.
A calm had settled into Lena’s spirit as she walked into the doors of Scalesville High with her two best friends, Wix and Kylee. The chaos of yesterday – the energy of the competition, then the bizarre possibility of Robert’s impending marriage proposal, and Kylee nearly flattening that poor sophomore against the lockers – all of it had settled into the background. The votes were cast. It was up to the senior class now. There was nothing left to do but wait.
Winning wasn’t just about a crown. The Homecoming Queen carried the honor of leading future pageants, gaining recognition across districts and even kingdoms. She would become a symbol of integrity, charisma, and leadership, with scholarships and opportunities that could change the course of her life. And, in a nod to matriarchal tradition, she alone would choose her King, or decide to reign alone, setting the stage for the opening dance at Homecoming and Reptilian Prom.
Lena exhaled, relieved to let the weight of it all go. The conversation returned the the usually wonder of what might be on the cafeteria menu for breakfast
But as they walked to their lockers, Lena noticed the absence of early morning chatter. The gossip, the laughter, the slamming of lockers was subdued. Conversations were in whispers and the pattern of movement among the crowd was erratic.
Something was off.
