(Blog 28) Mr. and Mrs. Caelen
(Continued from our last post…)
After graduation, Lena and Robert chose to exchange vows in the heart of the forrest on the edge of Scalesville. The ancient oaks stretched their emerald canopy overhead and dappled sunlight painted golden patterns on the moss-covered ground. The ceremony took place on a natural, flat stone floor next to the creek. The water rippled softly downstream, creating nature's own wedding music.
Lena's scales shimmered like polished peridot in the afternoon light as she walked down an aisle carpeted with wildflowers and fallen petals. Kylee and Wix served as Lena’s two matron of honors beautifully dressed in sparkling gowns the colors of spring. Sienna was asked to officiate the ceremony. Her mother walked her down the aisle and Robert waited beneath an archway of woven branches and white jasmine, his blue scales reflecting a rainbow of color, wings folded respectfully as his amber eyes never left his bride. His father stood proudly beside him.
The day was perfectly set as the two highschool sweethearts exchanged their love and devotion for one another. Lena felt truly joy for the first time since her father’s death. She longed for her father’s presence but held on to the words he spoke softly to her during their homecoming dance, “I’m always with you, sweet girl. Always”. She knew that even though she couldn’t feel the warm hug of her father’s arm, those words were still true. She knew he would be proud to call a dragon like Robert his son.
After their honeymoon, the Mr. and Mrs. Caelen (Lena and Robert) bought a house in Scalesville and Robert joined the war. He served his tour, and came home to build the life they'd dreamed of. They were happy. Lena was finally living a piece of her dream. Long walks through their forest as husband and wife and quiet evenings by the fire. A simple life.
Lena laid her first fertile egg, light green with pearlescent white spots.
When Lima hatched, Robert held his daughter and promised to protect her until the day he died. They were a family, complete and perfect in their little corner of the world.
But when Lima turned three, the military came calling again. This deployment promised better pay, enough to secure Lima's future. Robert read the orders as he pulled Lena close assuring her that it would be a quick mission bringing him back home before Lima’s fourth birthday.
Lima turned four without her father. He was captured as a prisoner of war. All communication came to a halt. The military could not confirm his fate and after years of searching, he and his squad were declared fallen heroes, their names forever etched into memorial walls.
Through her grief, Lena committed to the promise her late husband made to their daughter- to protect her until the day she died. She learned to perform under pressure, ignoring her needs and denying her own pleasures, sometimes working 2-3 jobs at a time to make ends meet. It was worth it for her daughter. Lima’s wellbeing became Lena’s sole motivation for living as she invested every bit of the energy she had into learning how to be a mother and father to her child.
