(Continued from our last post…)

The sun is barely set over West End of Scalesville when Pierre Hauteur Sr. lands on the curved stone walkway at the front of his estate. The Hauteur home towers taller than the other houses in the their wealthy neighborhood.

The house is a symmetrical structure, with a brick façade rich in warm red tones that contrast against the crisp white trim outlines of each elegantly arched window. The front door is painted a soft shade of sage - a color Mrs Hauteur picked out recently to add a bit of joy to the entrance of their home. Mr Hauteur deems this change as rubbish. He is intentional to remind her often how her need to freshen up the door is an embarrassment to him every time he walked into their home. This is a slow burning point of contention between the two.

Two classic urn planters sit on either side of the steps just behind the stone curved walkway. Each hold a mix of delicate plants that are refreshed seasonally by a local landscape company. The grass is always green and so even it almost looks painted on, with well-groomed shrubs tucked along the foundation.

The house is tucked into a larger plot of land surrounded by century old oak trees that create a natural thick barrier of visual and audiable privacy for the family.

The day has been long, humiliating, and final. After nearly two decades of business, Hauteur Print and Label Co. closed its doors for the last time.

Pierre Hauteur, Sr opens the sage door and steps into the foyer, greeted by the faint scent of rosemary from dinner and the cheerful chatter of his three sons upstairs.

“Dad!” a young voice calls from above where an eleven year old male dragon wearing glasses and a striped scarf has his arms and tail draped over the stair railing with his body pressing against the spindles. He holds a book in his left claws with an excited grin on his face. As his body bounces on the stairs, he asks, “Have you picked out your costume for the the movie this weekend?”

Pierre Sr. grunts and turns around quickly with a puff of steam streaming out of his nose.

He exhals sharply and barks back, “We’re not going anywhere this weekend.”

“Oh,” Pierre Jr. said softly taming his bounces to stop. “But we always go to the movies together when a new one comes out.”

“Enough.” His father’s voice demands. “You’ll never get anywhere with your nose stuck in those fantasy stories. Go upstairs and do your schoolwork before you waste any more of my time.”

Pierre froze. He nods and turns without a word, climbing the stairs in silence. It wasn’t the first time his father had been confusingly stern with him, but dressing up and going to the cinema was the one past time his whole family had enjoyed in the past. He wasn’t sure what he said to upset his father, but he knew better than to continue on and make matters worse.
