(Continued from our last post…)

Lima’s mind and sketchbook was bursting with ideas for stickers. She’d never felt so inspired in her life. This must have been what it was like to have purpose. Working with other creative minds was just what she needed to grow her self confidence and fill her longing for inclusion. Calisto’s powerhouse energy made her a strong mentor, and Spyder’s critical thinking skills could tackle any problem that caught their team off guard. They were working like clockwork, but despite the harmony, Spyder couldn’t shake the nagging feeling about Pip.

He was asking too much of Calisto to be head of production and be a marketing department of one. She was strong, but a dragon can only be stretched so far and he didn’t want to lose her to burnout. Pip’s personality made him the ideal dragon’s dragon. He knew how to lighten any situation. He knew how to hold an audience, but it didn’t matter and Spyder pushed himself to look for someone else to fill that role.

One sunny afternoon, a knock on the factory door came unannounced.

Spyder reluctantly opened the door, “Hello, can I help you? We’re actually not…”

Before he could finish his sentence the visitor said, “Perrie Hauteur. Business Compliance Department. I’m here to review your permits.”

A slender, meticulously polished brown dragon wearing spectacles and a scarf, despite the summer, stood in the doorway holding a badge in his claws and a clipboard tucked under his wing.

Spyder responded, “Oh yes sir. We have those. I’ll go get….”

Uninterested in the rest of Spyder’s words, Perrie interjected, “You have some permits. I’m here about your missing extensive fire permit.

By this point, Calisto had caught ear of the conversation and began walking closer to the two dragons, frankly ready to tail whip this Perrie character if he didn’t tone it down with his condescending tone. A little fired up herself, she quipped back, “Fire permit? We’re a sticker factory. We don’t use fire in our process!”

Perrie: (snootily adjusting his spectacles) “This isn’t about your process, Madame! It’s about you. You’re dragons. Any dragon-run business operating within Scalesville limits must have an extensive fire permit. It’s a precautionary measure.”

At this point Spyder had partially spread his left wing in front of Calisto to withhold her from coming any closer.

Calisto: “You’re joking, right? We’re making stickers, not starting infernos. But if you really want a reason to make us have a fire permit, I’ll give you one”

Perrie(ignoring her tone) “It’s a standard regulation. As you know, dragons are fire-breathing creatures, and the city council requires the permit regardless of industry. I’ll give you until the end of the week to secure the permit. Otherwise, your operations will be suspended.”

Spyder: “We’ll make sure it’s taken care of.”

Perrie: “Of course you will. I just made that clear. Keep in mind, there is also a leash law within the town limits of Scalesville required for anyone housing feral reptiles.” He flapped his wings and shot a final disapproving glance at Calisto and flew off.
