(Continued from our last post…)
After his visit to the Community Council ended up better than expected, Spyder had a pep in his step. He decided to lift off and take a flight around the city - something he hadn’t done in years.
You see, since technology had progressed in Scalesville, most dragons weren’t in the habit of flying much anymore. New ways of communicating and connecting with the world kept them less concerned with exploring new places or traveling. Everything that any reptile needed was within walking distance in Scalesville. But on this day, he wanted to take it all in from the sky. The cool breeze encircled his body as he lifted higher and higher for an aerial view.
From the sky he could see so many benchmark points from his past. He saw the old neighborhood he and Pip used to run a muck in, their old highschool and the forest that they used to explore for hours everyday in the summer and after school. Reluctant to recall it, he recognized the spot just east of the river where they’d found the young dragon in the cave. The sight of it knocked the air from his lungs, a visceral punch that forced him to descend rapidly. His landing was unsteady as he touched down near the clearing, his legs trembling beneath him. Standing at the mouth of the cave, memories surged back in sharp detail, as if no time had passed at all.
His body became tense and his insides burned like an inferno. Sweat beaded upon his forehead and tears flooded from his eyes. The release of anger and sadness from the memories was too much to control. He had repressed more than he’d known all these years. Ignoring his own pain by staying steadfast on Pip’s wellbeing and then Lena and Lima, he convinced himself that the past would stay in the past.
The recollection of the day they found Belle came through like a high def movie. They’d found her frail and weak with her poor little broken wing, clinging to life in the dark recess of the cave. Her small body was battered and bruised, but her spirit was fighting to hold on.
“She was so strong,” Spyder whispered through weeping, his voice cracking. “She survived the cave... why couldn’t she survive after?” His voice rose, raw with grief and anger.
And while he couldn’t understand many things that followed that day, he knew in his heart that in that moment, the Creator of the Cosmos was unraveling clues to the mystery of purpose for Spyder’s life.
