(Continued from our last post…)

Spyder didn't want to divulge to Calisto and Lima about how he knew about the Websters and the Community Council. Calisto didn't grow up in Scalesville and Lima was too young to remember when it happened. The Websters had treated him and Pip like superstars at the time, but in the days that followed, no-one said a word.

Now, standing outside the familiar doors, Spyder felt the weight of both nostalgia and apprehension. He needed their help, but would they even consider it for an unofficial business?

As he walked inside, he found himself triggered by the site of the same polished stone floors and marble slab walls that had enclosed the Community Council chambers 20 years earlier. He felt the force of his own hesitation press against him and his legs felt like boulders to carry on his feet. Spyder scanned the room, his nerves telling him to leave, while his mind tried to reassure him that there was no reason to be on edge.

He caught sight of a familiar older dragon at the desk, Hecubum.

Whispering to himself, “Please, please if there is any way that he doesn’t notice me…”

At first, Hecubum didn’t look up. “Name and reason for visit?” he asked, flipping through some documents.

“Spyder. I’m here to request promotional assistance for a business.”

Hecubum glanced up, his eyes narrowing. “Spyder… Spyder…” He tilted his head. “You look familiar, but I can’t quite…wait a minute. Is that…? You’ve got a mustache now! I’d almost missed it.”

Spyder scratched the back of his neck, trying not to cringe. “Yeah, it’s me. It’s been a while.”

Hecubum stood up and grinned, “How could I forget? You and your friend. What was his name… blue guy? Pip, that was it. I still remember the search like it was yesterday. Tragic ending, but what you two did… heroic. Truly.”

Spyder swallowed hard, sidestepping the memory. “Thanks, Hecubum. Look, I’m opening a sticker studio in the old factory on the other side of town, Wing Tails Sticker Studio, but we’re stuck waiting for a permit. In the meantime, I was hoping the council could help advertise a housewarming meet-and-greet event in two weeks. I’ll gladly pay the fee, but we’re not technically in business yet.”

Hecubum’s eyes softened, and he nodded. “Still putting yourself out there, huh? Good to see that hasn’t changed. So you’re not technically in business yet, but you still want to have this event?” he said, lowering his voice.

Spyder replied, “Yes, I know. We’re in a pickle with this permit thing. If it can’t be done…”

Continuing to whisper, Hecubum said, “Let me guess. Perrie Hauteur paid you a visit? Not my favorite dragon. Give me the date and time of your meet-and-greet. Sounds like a fun community event if you ask me, since you aren’t in business and all. No need to pay a fee.”

Spyder exhaled a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding and smiled a giddy grin. “Thanks, Hecubum. I owe you!”

“Don’t mention it. The town owes you that much.” Hecubum gave him a wink and meandered towards the back offices.
