(Blog 25) A Dragon Living Her Dream
After Homecoming, Lena’s senior year began to take off. She was in the school paper, got invited to everything. She was offered scholarships, and college scouts were soliciting her with gifts and briberies to consider their schools. It felt like she had the whole world at her claws.
(Continued from our last post…)
Even with everything going right, Lena knew each decision wouldn’t be easy. She had to consider her relationship with Robert. He had much different plans.
Robert was realistic, discussing a long distance relationship while he served in the Queen’s war. He didn’t want Lena to miss opportunities to pursue her dreams but her couldn’t deny the calling he had to grow as a dragon of integrity by serving in the military. For Robert, it was his ticket to higher education and he felt the training he would receive there would allow him to take care of a family once he returned home.
Every time he brought it up, Lena would nod and change the subject. She didn’t want to think about it. Not when things were going so well. Not when it reminded her so much of her dad, who’d was still there.
She knew Robert meant well. He thought he was being brave and making a difference, but all Lena could feel was the slow, quiet fear that everything good might come to an end.
She just kept smiling. She focused on the fun stuff like prom coming up in the spring, dress shopping, theme planning, and who was bringing what to the afterparty.
Telling Robert how she really felt seemed like betrayal. How could she help him if she didn’t support him? Deployment, at least, allowed him a chance to come home, but if they broke up, she could lose him forever.
Lena had a good life and she played that role well. On the surface, she was the envy of every girl in school. But the part of her that worried about the future, she kept hidden, insistent not to ruffle scales. As long as she could keep to peace, maybe it would all work out.
