(Blog 24) Lena’s Special Dance
(Continued from our last post…)
The tall dragon stood stone still as his eyes swelled with tears. Joy and pride radiated off of him and his expression spoke the story of a thousand words.
As their song came to an end, Lena now had her eyes closed and head comfortably resting against Robert’s neck romanced by their rhythmic sway.
“May I have the next dance?”
Her eyes opened and she awakened from her somnolence. He was there - standing behind her. She lost it. Everyone lost it. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Robert stepped back, kissed the top of Lena’s left claw and eased back to watch from the crowd. Sobbing uncontrollably she lunged into a hug and wrapped her arms around her father.
“Oh Daddy, you’re here! With me. You’re here with me. How?!” It had been over a year since his last deployment to battle. “Where’s mom? Is she here?”
“My plane landed an hour ago. I didn’t want to miss a chance to dance with the Queen. I’m so proud of you”, her father said as he hugged her tightly and attempted some sort of motion that mimicked slow dancing. As they rocked back and forth, he lifted her head up gently with his claws and locked eyes with his daughter’s. His smile turned into a tearful laugh, “I get to go surprise your mom next!”
“Are you home for good?” Lena asked.
“Only for a few days and then I have to go back.”
“But you’re here with me, now”, she repeated to herself surprised once again to say it.
“I’m always with you, sweet girl. Always,” and he laid her head on his chest to hug her once again.
After their dance, Lena’s father left the school to head home to surprise her mom. Lena and Robert enjoyed their rest of their evening with their friends.
