35. He Finally Shows Up

(Continued from our last post…)

Ashley spent the better part of the morning with Calisto and Lima, sketching out ideas for Belle’s Nook. They spoke with her about the inspiration behind the space and their mission to honor the baby dragon’s legacy. Ashley drafted a design so moving it nearly brought Spyder to tears. The team immediately agreed to push forward, determined to have it ready in time for the meet-and-greet. By noon, Ashley was heading home to check on her dad, leaving the others to settle down from the whirlwind morning.

Spyder and the girls decided to finish the leftover bagels for lunch and eat-in, allowing a chance for candid chatter and laid back camaraderie. However the calm was short-lived when their lunch hour was interrupted by a tapping on the back door. The three dragons locked eyes in synchrony with a shared dreaded assumption of another visit from Perrie Hauteur. Spyder stood up, still chewing a bite of his gluten-free bagel.

Frustration churned in his chest as he thought about confronting the compliance officer’s harassment once again, but he composed himself and decided to meet Perrie’s antics with firm authority this time. “Mr Hauteur,” he called through the door, his voice growing sharper with every word, “we are not open for business and I believe we have no other pressing matters to discuss.”

He opened the wide, metal door.

“Woooow, I didn’t know you had it in you to sound like such a jerk, dude?” said a voice with much less anger behind it than anything that had ever been said by Perrie Hauteur. The goofy blue dragon stood in the doorway as though he was waiting for a home reunion, nevermind he’d been MIA for the last several weeks ignoring Spyder’s phone calls and text messages.

By this point, Calisto was stretching her neck from the break room to catch a glimpse of what was going on and once she realized that it was Pip, she rolled her eyes so hard and let out a sigh that caught Lima’s attention.

Blocked from view and too far to make our clear voices, Lima asked, “Who is it?”

“Let’s just say I would have been ok with another visit from Perrie Hauteur.” Calisto responded.

“I should sound like a jerk, Pip. What are you doing here? I haven’t heard from you since I came to your aunt’s. If you didn’t want to talk about a job, that’s fine, but why would you ghost me?” Spyder asked.

“You’re right. And I’m the jerk. Spyder, we need to have a long talk.” Pip emphasized the long and then stretched his neck to look beyond Spyder’s wings to see Calisto and Lima standing outside of the break room eager to hear the whole conversation. “Maybe, um, alone.”
