(Blog 22) Thursday, October 6: At Scalesville High
(Continued from our last post…)
Thursday Morning at School: The halls of Scalesville High were alive with an energy that was elevated above the everyday morning rush. Pip and Spyder returned to school for the first time since Baby Belle’s rescue and found themselves surrounded by fans nearly every minute of the day. Students crowded them between classes and in the cafeteria, eager for every detail.
“Wait, you really followed a trail of blood into a cave?”
“Did you fight something in there?!”
“Dude, are you gonna be on TV?”
Spyder kept his usual calm demeanor responding to questions with short, factual answers. Pip, on the other claw, soaked up every minute of it with each recount of the tale more fantastic than before.
At one point, while the two finally had a moment of semi-privacy near the back lockers, Spyder leaned closer and said, “Hey, just so you know, my mom wants us to come over after school. She said she’s got snacks and wants to talk to us about everything. Said we probably haven’t had a second to breathe.”
Pip smirked, nudging his friend with the side of his wing. “OK. Ooh, you think she’s got those chicken bites again?”
“Probably. And tea,” Spyder replied, then added under his breath, “She also said something about giving us an update about a call from the Websters’ guy that’s handling our story… uh… Hank? Heckle? What was his name?’”
Pip snorted. “Hecubum! He said on the news their would be some kind of celebration for us. I wonder what it will be? She probably wants to talk to us about that.”
Elsewhere, Lena floated through her day on a cloud of her own as the new Homecoming Queen. Kylee and Wix assisted her like loyal wingmates, proud and protective.
During lunch, in the swirl of voices and chatter, the crowd shifted just enough for Lena to catch a clear glimpse Spyder.
Spyder looked up at that same moment. Their eyes met in a moment of mutual respect.
Lena gave a simple wave and a sweet smile that Spyder returned with a small nod of recognition and a quick wave before a group of lizards pulled him over to have him and Pip tell the story, yet again.
Behind her, Kylee squinted. “Wait… that’s the kid I nearly flattened when I was passing out campaign stickers.”
“I think so,” Lena replied softly.
“He walks way too quiet for a dragon. He didn’t even make a fuss when I ran into him. That’s him.”
“Yeah,” Lena murmured, eyes lingering a second longer before turning away. Somehow, the experiences they were living that day were connected, although she’d didn’t know exactly how. The shared intensity of their stories sparked a quiet curiosity in her and a desire to get to know him better.
