(Blog 23) Homecoming Dance

(Continued from our last post…)

Lena’s senior year was filled with moments and memories that would last a lifetime.

Winning Queen felt like a dream come true. She picked Robert as her King (obviously), and the two of them performed the opening dance at Homecoming they had practiced for weeks. It was magical. The music, the lights, the way they moved together, like they were made for the moment. The student body circled around the dance floor to admire how they moved in unison with perfect poise and grace.

Wix leaned over quietly to Kylee and spoke in her ear as she continued to focus on Lena and Robert, “There’s just something about those two, isn’t there? A real love. I’m so happy for Lena. She deserves every bit of it.”

Kylee responded, keeping in tone with Wix’s quiet tone, “I really hope they can figure out the whole joining-the-war thing. I hope he changes his mind. I know it would be hard for Lena.”

“Yeh, and she’d abandon her dreams to be with him, I’m afraid.” As Wix said it, her right ear twitched and redirected its attention to a quiet shriek in the back of the gym.

Beyond the conversation between Wix and Kylee, everyone in the room was was enthralled with watching the couple dance. Cautious to keep the moment, Wix turned her head just enough to check the noise she had solely noticed. She could only see the shadow of a tall male dragon standing motionless next to the gym doors against the wall. She peered to search for any noticeable details and suddenly gasped with an inhale loud enough to shift the focus of several students around her to take note at what she was looking at.

With his presence now known, the shadowed guest began to walk softly towards the crowd. Wix motioned for the students around her to make a path so the dragon could continue his motion towards the center. Within seconds, he was standing in front of the students lining the inner circle watching Lena and Robert dance.

As they waltzed and twirled to the end of the song, Robert noticed the extra guest dimly illuminated in the residual glow of the spotlight. The tall dragon’s presence changed the ambience in the room from wonder to anticipation. Whispers spread like fireflies among the crowd. Traditionally a symbolic rite of passage for the Homecoming Queen alone, the dance this year transcended expectation, becoming an unforgettable moment for all in attendance.
