One might assume that opening a new business might be an emotional journey, but poor Spyder kept getting knocked over in a collision of highs and lows, each wave crashing harder than the last. How could he not have known? How did he not remember?
Fifteen minutes before one of the happiest moments of his adult dragon life and he was stuck in the bathroom balling his eyes out over a water bottle and a sticker.
To Lima and Calisto, the last few weeks of Spyder’s mood swings seemed right on track for a female dragon going through a mid-life change, except that he was female and he wasn’t in mid-life. No, Spyder was just in the mist of a series of awakenings and spiritual growth.
He couldn’t deny a divine weaving of the instances that had taken place over the last several weeks, reconnecting with Hecubum after that frustrating delay with the compliance officer, meeting Ashley after saving her from the same compliance officer’s wrath (why did so much seem to circle back to Pierre?), and now this moment. This small, forgotten sticker had cracked open something buried deep.
It was the same sticker he had given Belle to keep her calm when he and Pip found her in the woods. He knew about Lena’s story and her tragedy, but the weeks right after Belle’s death were a blur - memories lost that erased details allowing him to piece together that it was Lena’s homecoming campaign that put the sticker in his satchel on that hallmark day.
He’d spent years pouring himself into protecting Lena and Lima, altruistically carrying the weight for them. But here the past and present met one another in a moment of beautiful serendipity. Spyder finally understood: Lena had taken care of him first. Her campaign had given him the one tool he needed to reach Belle that day. Even before he yearned for it, she had already been part of his story.
